Carpet Diem is an exhibition of contemporary textile design held during November 2023 in Paris. Sixty carpets by independent artists and brands were exhibited. I developed two designs for LRNCE studio, one of which was exhibited. LRNCE is a design brand based in Marrakech that combines contemporary art with Moroccan craftsmanship.
The brief was to design an organic-shaped rug 2 to 3 metres long, based on paintings by Laurence Leenaert, the brand’s artistic director. Playful and abstract shapes were analysed. Followed by a research into colour, weaving methods and wool thickness. The two rugs play with differences in height, weaving techniques (cut or loop), fringes and voids. Each rug is a unique work of art, a painting that has become physical and three-dimensional, in which users can lose themselves. A visual and sensory experience.
